Akha Swing Festival, Chiang Rai
Held by the Akha community in the Mae Fah Luang district of Chiang Rai, this traditional ceremony celebrates life and fertility. The giant swings are constructed during the rainy season at a time when the crops are established, and the hard work of harvest lies ahead. Feasts are held, and Akha women wear their traditional dress as they take to the swing and sing the incantations which are sent skywards to the heavens in the hope of a good harvest and good luck for the future.
