Visitors flying to Phuket under the Phuket Sandbox arrangement can now visit more destinations in Southern Thailand under the new Phuket Sandbox 7+7 Extension scheme. The new scheme was formally approved on August 16 and came into immediate effect. Previously, fully vaccinated overseas visitors were required to stay in Phuket for 14 nights before travelling to other areas of Thailand. Under the Phuket Sandbox 7+7 Extension, travellers can now spend 7 nights in Phuket and then move to approved destinations in Southern Thailand for the next 7 nights. The approved destinations are:
- Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan, Ko Tao (Surat Thani province)
- Ko Phi Phi, Ko Ngai, and Railay Beach (Krabi province)
- Khao Lak, Ko Yao Noi and Ko Yao Yai (Phang Nga province)
The Phuket Sandbox 7+7 Extension programme signifies the progress of Thailand’s plan to gradually reopen to fully vaccinated international travellers within the set time frame. The launch of the Phuket Sandbox from 1 July, Samui Plus from 15 July, and Phuket Sandbox 7+7 Extension from 16 August will lead the way to the reopening of more pilot destinations, which are currently preparing appropriate measures to ensure the health and safety of both the tourists and local people.– Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand
Arrangements for the Phuket 7+7 Extension
Overseas visitors still need to follow the entry requirements for the Phuket Sandbox scheme for the first 7 nights. To be able to travel to any of the approved destinations for the next 7 nights, travellers need to obtain a ‘transfer form’ issued by their SHA Plus hotel in Phuket. This form simply indicates that the traveller has completed a 7 night stay in Phuket. This form will then accompany the required negative results of two Covid-19 tests while in Phuket. These tests are conducted on the day of arrival and day 6 or 7 in Phuket.
Travellers who use the 7+7 Extension will receive another Covid-19 test on day 12 or 13 of their stay. If this is negative, a form will be issued by the traveller’s hotel once the 7 night extension is complete and they can then continue to other destinations in Thailand.*
*This is subject to change depending on the Covid situation in any given province. We advise following the local news with the TAT Newsroom in case there are any changes to rules for inter-provincial travel.

Phuket Sandbox 7+7 Extension FAQs
Can I make my own transport arrangements to Krabi, Phang Nga or Ko Samui?
Travelling from Phuket to the approved 7+7 destinations is only possible via approved routes and modes of transport:
Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao
(Surat Thani province)
Ko Samui can be reached via direct domestic flights with Bangkok Airways on the Phuket (HKT) – Ko Samui (USM) route. Onward travel to Ko Pha Ngan or Ko Tao is possible via SHA Plus-certified boat and ferry services from approved piers.
Ko Phi Phi, Ko Ngai and Railay Beach
Can be reached by SHA Plus-certified boat and ferry services from approved piers.
(Phang Nga province)
Can be reached by SHA Plus-certified car transfer services from Phuket directly to the SHA Plus-certified hotels in Khao Lak.
Ko Yao Noi and Ko Yao Yai
(Phang Nga province)
Can be reached via SHA Plus-certified boat and ferry services from approved piers.
Do I have to stay for the full 7 nights in any of the approved destinations?
Travellers aren’t obliged to stay the full 7 nights in any of the approved extension destinations. For example, after completing 7 nights in Phuket, you could spend 4 nights in Khao Lak and then fly home. To do this, you would need to proceed directly to Phuket International Airport on the day of departure. At the port of entry back into Phuket (e.g. Sarasin Bridge), travellers will need to show a plane ticket or other proof of their international travel from Phuket.
Can I stay in Phuket for 7 nights, then stay in an extension area in Krabi for 4 nights, and then another extension area e.g. Phang Nga for the remaining 3 nights?
You must choose only one province extension area (e.g Krabi or Phang Nga or Surat Thani) to stay for 7 nights and this must be booked and paid for when you apply for the Certificate of Entry.
Can I stay at different SHA Plus hotels?
For the first 7 nights in Phuket you are required to stay at the same SHA Plus hotel. After that, you can stay at more than one hotel within your chosen extension area, but all hotels you stay at must be SHA Plus properties. Your hotel(s) must also be pre-booked and pre-paid in advance. A decision to move hotels cannot be made on the spot.
Are the rules the same for Phang Nga?
Please note that the rules are different for the Phang Nga extension area. For example, you can stay at more than one hotel in Khao Lak, but you are not allowed to change to another hotel in Ko Yao. While you can travel freely around Khao Lak, if you stay in Ko Yao you may only enjoy the facilities at your SHA Plus hotel.
