6 of the best things to see and do in Khao Sok

With a scenic lake, some of the oldest evergreen forests in the world, and an array of wildlife, Khao Sok National Park is a delight for nature lovers. Although some travellers visit Khao Sok as a day trip from Surat Thani or Khao Lak, it’s best to spend at least a few days here to explore at leisure.

Take a boat ride on Cheow Larn Lake

Take a leisurely ride on a longtail boat to experience the breathtaking scenery at Khao Sok. A typical boat ride includes a two or three-hour cruise around the lake and an opportunity to visit at least one cave.

Boat trips can be booked when you arrive at the visitor centre at Cheow Larn Lake. However, it can be more convenient to arrange the trip in advance through your hotel or guesthouse. If you book as part of an organised tour, it may also include a stop at Ratchaprapa Dam to admire the views. A shared boat ride typically costs around 800 Baht per person, but if you prefer a more private experience with your family or friends, you can hire a boat for around 1,800 Baht.

Ride a bamboo raft

For another serene experience on the water, join a rafting trip on the Sok River. Local guides slowly punt the bamboo rafts down the river as the passengers sit back and admire the scenery. You can also take a short hike through the jungle where your expert local guide will show you the traditional way to boil water in a bamboo stem.

Expect to pay around 500 Baht for a half-day or 1,000 Baht for a full day of guided hiking. Having a guide has its advantages as they can show you hidden waterfalls and caves. There is also the chance to find one of the largest and most unique flowers in the world. The Rafflesia kerrii, known as Bua Phut in Thai, is the official flower of Surat Thani province. This distinctive red flower is notable for its huge size and its putrid odour which attracts flies for pollination.
