As repeat visitors to Thailand already know, being anywhere in Thailand is good for your health. The Land of Smiles has a happy habit of getting under your skin in the best possible way. A holiday here is perfect for relieving both physical and emotional tension. This edition of our Itinerary Ideas series focuses on health and wellness. There are so many options for a wellness break in Thailand. We’ve put together some suggestions for a two-week winter holiday that will enable you to experience the diversity of Thailand. This itinerary takes in the city and the countryside, rounding off with beach time to top up on a healthy dose of ‘Vitamin Sea’.
For a two-week winter wellness break, we suggest something like this:
- 3 days in Bangkok
- 5 days in Chiang Mai
- 6 days on the Andaman Coast* (e.g. Phuket or Khao Lak or Ko Yao Noi)
*If you’re travelling during the summer holidays, you can swap out the Andaman Coast for the Gulf Coast e.g. Hua Hin or Ko Samui or Ko Pha Ngan.
Bangkok
We sometimes suggest spending time in Bangkok at the end of your holiday, but for this itinerary, we include it at the start. Although the bustle of Bangkok can be part of its charm, this itinerary aims to make you feel sabai sabai as soon as possible. For this reason, we think it’s worth spending extra on your accommodation in Bangkok to ensure you have an oasis of calm.

There are countless choices for accommodation in Bangkok, and with the ease of access provided by an efficient transport system, getting around to the main tourist locations is straightforward. This itinerary is all about relaxing, so we suggest not trying to cram in too much sightseeing during your time here. If you want to explore, consider staying at one of the city’s riverside hotels. This allows you to enjoy the river views while also providing easy access to locations like ICONSIAM, Wat Arun, Wat Pho, and the Grand Palace.
On this two-week holiday, we suggest three days in Bangkok. However, if you wanted to extend that by a few days, you could book into the outstanding RAKxa Integrative Wellness Retreat for one of their 5-day wellness treatments. Situated in Bang Krachao (aka Bangkok’s ‘green lung’), RAKxa is one of the best wellness centres in Thailand.

Wherever you decide to stay, take time out to walk around any of Bangkok’s green spaces and shake off the effects of any jet lag. One of our favourites is the expansive Benjakitti Forest Park, which connects via an elevated walkway to the popular Lumpini Park.

The temple of Wat Pho is home to the famous Reclining Buddha and is also the spiritual home of traditional Thai medicine and massage. Getting a Thai massage here is a memorable way to begin your wellness holiday. For a more luxurious treatment, book a session at any of Bangkok’s high-end spas. The Oriental Spa at the Mandarin Oriental is one of the world’s top urban spas, while the superb Spa Botanica at The Sukhothai Hotel adapts its treatments according to the season and the availability of fruits and other natural ingredients.

Chiang Mai
From Bangkok, you can fly directly to Chiang Mai in a little over an hour. Thailand’s second city is regarded as the cultural and spiritual capital of the North and one of the best locations in the country for a health and wellness break.

The main choice you have in Chiang Mai is whether to stay in the city or the countryside. If you choose to stay in Chiang Mai city, you can wander around the historic old town area, discover ancient temples, and explore the charming street markets. If you want to stay at a health-focused resort in the city, take a look at Aleenta Retreat or RarinJinda Wellness Spa Resort.

Staying in the countryside allows you to enjoy the picturesque mountain scenery and provides an even more laid-back vibe compared to the already mellow vibe of the city. Panviman is a good option for a relaxing stay with its spa treatments and daily meditation and yoga classes.

Whether you opt to stay at the Four Seasons or not, you can still visit their luxurious wellness sanctuary, Wara Cheewa. Indulge in a range of treatments inspired by traditional Thai healing practices and modern wellness techniques.

Wherever you decide to stay, make time for a visit to the village of Baan Rai Kong Khing. The villagers have established an award-winning education centre to help preserve traditional medicine and promote organic herbal products. Baan Rai Kong Khing is an excellent example of responsible tourism and one of the few locations in Thailand where you can experience the unique yam khang fire massage.
In and around Chiang Mai city centre, you’ll find numerous little massage shops where you can treat yourself to a daily foot massage. For more pampering in relaxing surroundings, book a treatment at the Oasis Spa or Fah Lanna Spa. One of the signature local treatments at Fah Lanna is the tok sen massage, which involves a special wooden ‘hammer’. The small wooden tool gently taps away on the meridian lines. It’s more relaxing than it sounds with the tapping motions and the sound vibrations combining to ease muscle tension and clear energy blockages in the body.

Andaman Coast
From Chiang Mai, you can fly directly to Phuket. Although Thailand’s largest island is one of the busiest tourist destinations in the country, it’s big enough that you can still find tranquility. Phuket is home to world-class wellness centres and is a great choice to wrap up this winter wellness break. Alternatively, you could make the short journey north from Phuket Airport to Khao Lak. Another option is to travel across to the tranquil island of Ko Yao Noi.

This charming boutique resort in Khao Lak is owned and operated by the same couple who originally built it, creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Designed to offer guests an authentic glimpse into Thai culture and lifestyle, the resort sits on land that was once a thriving cashew farm. Embracing its agricultural roots, the property features water buffalo, an organic garden, a serene lake, and coconut trees. With lush greenery, convenient beach access, and a friendly local team, this resort provides a tranquil setting for a rejuvenating wellness retreat.
Several hotels in the Khao Lak area offer an array of wellness facilities with stand-out options including The Sarojin and Devasom.
